The town of Minnedosa
The picturesque town of Minnedosa with a population of approximately 2,500 is located 210 kilometers northwest of Winnipeg, Manitoba’s capital city, only 50 kilometers North of Brandon and 50 kilometers South of the beautiful Riding Mountain National Park.
Nestled in a valley created some 13,000 years ago by the rushing waters of the last ice age, Minnedosa was created in the 1870’s when John Tanner developed a stopping place along the Carlton Trail at a crossing of the Little Saskatchewan River. It became known as “Tanner’s Crossing” soon attracting hundreds of settlers. In 1923 a dam and power plant spillway were created on the Little Saskatchewan River that winds through Minnedosa creating the town’s jewel, Lake Minnedosa. Minnedosa officially became incorporated in 1883.
Lake Minnedosa is lined with cottages, year round homes, a beautiful sandy beach and a public campground. A Bison Park at the South end of the lake is the home for a herd of Plains Bison reminiscent of the millions that once roamed the land. The lake is also home to the largest “fish ladder” in Manitoba and the Minnedosa Rowing Center, a world-class rowing facility that hosts several regional and national events. In the winter, the lake is the spot for “Skate the Lake!” Also be sure to check out “Ski Valley”, the curling & hockey rinks and the new 18 hole golf course!
Minnedosa has a diversified rural economy with a strong agricultural base. It is the regional service center for over 9,000 people in towns surrounding Minnedosa. The Minnedosa Chamber of Commerce is proud to have over 100 members representing virtually every economic sector. Many of these businesses export their products and services around the region and, indeed, around the globe. With the production of ethanol and biodiesel, as well as wind energy developments, it is quickly becoming the renewable energy capital of Manitoba! Other businesses are leaders in the manufacturing, export and service industries. Minnedosa is a great place to do business!
Minnedosa is truly a full-service community. It boasts a wide variety of retail shops and services, comfortable accommodations and restaurants to suit any taste. The Main Street is a showcase for the business community, with many historical buildings, parks, and sweeping valley views. The Business Improvement Committee of the Chamber of Commerce has worked closely with the Town of Minnedosa and many local organizations to undertake the beautification of Main Street, with new parks and “street-scaping” that highlights the local heritage.
